gobject - a mechanism which to automatically bind low level C data structures and functions to higher level languages w/ little developer effort
What are you doing?
- We will design an interface for Gnome using Glade
- We will use python and the GTK+ gobject bindings to implement a simple backend
- Application will display data from twitter in real time
Why are you doing it?
- GTK is a cross-platform toolkit
- Native desktop apps will never fully go away
- Presents a simple way to interface w/ the desktop, no boilerplate needed
- Because it's awesome
A quick note on gnome-shell
- latest hotness from gnome
- forked the Metacity window manager, called Mutter
- still renders GTK, just now ontop of Clutter/OpenGL
- native GTK apps are still fully supported
